The main function of auctioneers is to direct the sale of items for sale through a bidding process. Auctioneers are trained to keep up a lively pace for proceedings as well as to entice bidders to place the highest bids possible. They are responsible for offering the items for bid, taking bids and then selling them to the highest bidder. They may be trained in the legal and practical aspects of conducting auctions and may be required to be licensed and bonded. An auctioneer may be hired for a variety of auctions involving estate sales, antiques and collectibles. An auctioneer may be paid a flat fee or may work on a commission where they receive a portion of the sales generated during the auction.
